Wow another blog post! And I didn't even put 3 months in between this and the last one this time! Just a quick update. Been a busy week or so. I've been a bit sick and missed a few days of school but I'm mostly better now. Last Tuesday was the Rotary "Thanksgiving" show which I played 3 times for. Shoutout to my fantastic partner Veronica for being the second half of a wonderful performance of "Train Song" by Feist and Ben Gibbard. I think we truly nailed it and can't wait to see what else we do together this year. Also my school gala happened last Friday. It was a big party and I got to eat together with my class. I even won "Years best male exchange student" in my class, an award that I will truly cherish the rest of my life. Other than a delightful dinner there was traditional Danish dance that we have been practicing in gym class for a couple weeks. It was a chaotic mess but it was a super awesome and incredibly fun chaotic mess. And through all this wonderful business I also changed to my second host family in Denmark. Though I am very sad to leave my first family who gave me an incredible introduction to Denmark and Danish ways, I am also extremely happy so far in my second family. I will have many more chances to see my first family again especially one of the host sisters who is in my class and who I see pretty much every day at school. Pictured below are all my new families. District 1470 exchange students, class 2m in Virum Gymnasium, and my first host family. Also an excellent picture from the performance.

ReplyDeleteHey! I'm going to be an exchange student in Denmark next year through Rotary. I haven't found out where I'm going to live yet. I was wondering a) when you found out what district/city you live in and b) what the chances are of living in or around Copenhagen.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm wondering how you're doing at learning Danish? do you speak it frequently, or do you mainly speak English?
Thanks for the great blog! I love reading posts from Danish exchange students and looking forward to my year next year :)
Hej Zachary! Exciting to hear! Denmark is a wonderful place! I found out my city and district a few weeks before my exchange. I personally received information from my host families who managed to find me on Facebook. It was maybe... a month or two before I left? It seems so far away now! In terms of chances of living in or around Copenhagen it's really a roll of the dice. There are 5 districts in Denmark and one of them (the one I am in) includes Copenhagen and the surrounding area. Copenhagen is a great place but keep open to wherever you go in Denmark! Aarhus is also a wonderful city, and you'll surely make it to Copenhagen at some point if you aren't placed there. I'm doing personally well with Danish. It's a tough language, and they speak such excellent English here that it's certainly a large challenge. I'm not fluent but I'm definitely competent and can hold conversation and have a broad vocabulary. Just stick with it and it will all go wonderfully. Thanks about the blog! I'll get back to updating it soon...
DeleteThanks for the information! I definitely will be extremely happy no matter where in Denmark I live, just previously I didn't even think that Copenhagen was a possibility (I thought it was like a 1/100 chance). That's too bad it takes so long to figure out where you live, I'm so excited to find out! My sister did her exchange in Belgium last year and found out who her first family was by early April. Oh well!
ReplyDeleteThanks again.
